Notes on the New Girl by RL Stine

The book opens with a strange, first person chapter that gives away the entire book.

Corey Brooks is a gymnast at Shadyside high and a joke, and he sees a beautiful new girl at school. He has a friend of the opposite sex named Lisa Blume who obviously likes him, but he completely misses it. He's obsessed with the new girl after seeing her once, and her name is Anna Corwin. Corey literally begins to stalk her, getting the operator to give out her address and phone number (this was back when all houses had 1 one for the entire house and you could look up someone's address in a phone book unless the number was unlisted). Corey calls and the person who answers is rude and hangs up and claims there's nobody there named Anna. A few days later, he's legitimately obsessed enough to call her again and hears her screaming in the background. Instead of calling the cops, he decides to go to Fear Street to her house and meets a young man who says that Anna is dead.

To prove to himself that Anna is real, he breaks into the principal's office to find her permanent record, only to discover she's not in the files. After going to a basketball game, Corey gets a mysterious phone call telling him that Anna is dead and not to go near her any longer, but Corey can't sleep and goes to find Anna, and she appears, insisting she's real and that her brother Brad is crazy. Corey does research in a library and finds a newspaper story from a neighboring town that Anna Corwin was killed. Anna calls him that night and begs for help, so Corey goes to her, but has to be careful of Brad, per her directions, but runs into him anyway, and Brad gets threatening. Lisa's cat gets killed and she believes Anna did it, but Corey can't believe it. Corey goes with Lisa to the dance, and Lisa gets angry with him, only to get shoved when she goes down the hall alone, and they believe it's Brad. They find him in a biology classroom and end up locked in as Brad escapes. Corey breaks them out but doesn't call the cop, still. They go to the pizza parlour after the dance and Corey goes to find Anna on Fear Street, and finds Anna and Brad in a physical fight. Corey knocks him out, and Anna is so thankful, but wants to finish the job and kill Brad. Corey won't let her, so she turns on him with a letter opener. Brad wakes up and exposes that Anna is really Willa, the deceased Anna's jealous sister. Anna fell down stairs and the family suspects it was Willa who shoved her, but they didn't want to see Willa in jail for the rest of her life, but couldn't afford professional help for her. They call the police. Corey finally realizes that Lisa likes him and they get together.
